Woodland trails, rocky ridges + winding brooks offer plenty to explore in Cockaponset. Connecticut’s second-largest state forest stretches across eleven towns, with an extensive network of trails in Chester + Haddam.

Choose a woodland hike, a jaunt around the lake, explore designated mountain biking routes, or head to Pattaconk Recreation Area for a picnic, paddle, or summer swim.

GOOD TO KNOW //
• Open daily, 8 a.m. to sunset.
• There are multiple entrances; choose your trail + parking area before heading out.
• Some trails are hiking-only; check the map before biking or horseback riding.
• Leashed dogs welcome on hiking trails + in picnic areas, but not on the beach.
• Hunting occurs in the forest. Check current seasons + wear bright orange during hunting season.
• This is a ‘carry in, carry out’ facility — please bring your trash and recyclables with you when you leave.
